Council is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions for our community by 2040.

In addition our draft Integrated Transport Strategy 2045, defines our objective to make our transport system more sustainable and support our community’s transition to low-emission forms of transport.

The installation of EV charging infrastructure would help us achieve these goals.

EV kerbside chargers enhance the use of current spaces by providing essential charging infrastructure for EVs that would already be parked in the neighbourhood.

Each charger will serve two adjacent parking spaces, which will be clearly signposted as ‘Electric Vehicles Only While Charging’. These spaces remain available to the public 24/7, but are reserved for only electric vehicles actively charging with a maximum limit of 4 hours during the stipulated daytime charging period, and overnight charging available after hours.

Each charger is dual-port and will be mounted to existing power poles to reduce visual or physical impacts. They will serve two adjacent parking spaces, which will be accompanied by signposts labelled ‘Electric Vehicles Only While Charging’. Users will be required to bring their own chargers to connect to the port. There will be no cords at the charger while it’s not in use.

Priority areas have been identified where people have the least access to private, off-street parking for charging EVs. These locations include a mix of residential and destination based spots such as near parks, shopping centres, and areas with medium-density housing – where public EV charging is most needed.

There has been a remarkable rise in uptake by City of Ryde residents, with the number of registered EVs increasing from just 85 in 2020 to around 3,200 by November 2025 (Transport for NSW, 3 November 2025). Increasing the availability of charging infrastructure is key to foster the uptake of electric vehicles. By participating in this program, City of Ryde aims to provide charging infrastructure to our residents and visitors in a cost and resource-effective manner.

The NSW Government EV Kerbside Charging Grants program is investing $4.5 million to increase charging options for EV drivers who have limited or no access to off-street parking to charge an EV.

The EV kerbside chargers will be installed and operated by Chargepost and EVX. For further information on costs associated with using the EV kerbside chargers, please refer to their websites:
